What I'm drinking

>> This section of the website is a bit self-indulgent, but in a way it's like declaring my bias. I like to think I'm pretty broadminded in my tastes, though rum and vodka remain undiscovered pleasures. Perhaps I just haven't met the right ones yet.

>> Sainsbury's Fino Sherry

Just a great aperitif to keep in the fridge. Bone dry, with a pleasing creaminess, it's terrific value and best enjoyed while reluctantly stirring a midweek risotto. For some reason I struggle to convert my friends to dry sherry -- which is quite sad for the category. but good news for me because I don't have to share mine. Actually, that's not necessarily a good thing.

>> Harveys Sussex Ale

You should always try to support your local brewery. Luckily, Harveys makes this quite an easy task. For me, this is a pint that has to be savoured in a country pub in its native county -- it just isn't the same anywhere else. Harveys is practically a religion in the Lewes area and I have an almost unquestioning loyalty to this rich, headless, chestnut-coloured ale.

Taylor's Chip Dry>> Taylor's Chip Dry  White Port

I first drank this in the Douro Valley with olives and salted almonds, which is a combination that takes some beating. It's the sort of aperitif that makes you want to delay dinner for as long as possible. There is much more sweetness here than in a fino sherry, and it works beautifully with savoury food. It makes a pleasant long drink with tonic water, but I just can't pluck up the courage to dilute the stuff. It slips down all too easily as it is.
